The $380 Million Bitcoin Pizza

Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have exponentially risen in popularity and price over the years. This trend was not foreseen and because of that there is plenty of heart wrenching stories surrounding the topic. Who could have predicted the value these coins would accumilate anyways?

It was May 22, 2010 and Bitcoin was around just 8 cents. To the few who knew about Crypto it was largely seen as something to use for fun and play around with. That is how Laszlo Hanyecz saw it because he wanted to try and buy two Papa John's pizzas with this new thing called Bitcoin. “I wanted to do the pizza thing because to me it was free pizza" Lazlo claims.

Laszlo Hanyecz was unfortunately successful in his purchase (see picture below) and had to fork over about 10,000 Bitcoin in exchange. In 2010 this Bitcoin was worth about $41. At the time of writing this article 10,000 Bitcoin is worth about $380 million, yikes!

What makes this even worse is Lazlo claims he went on to do this multiple times throughout the summer of 2010. Everything accounted for, he spent over 100,000 Bitcoin! Today that is about $3.8 billion dollars or 190 million large Papa John's pizzas.

Despite losing the chance of becoming a Bitcoin billionaire, Laszlo Hanyecz does not seem bothered and says "I don't regret it. I think that it's great that I got to be part of the early history of Bitcoin in that way". Others would argue this is the wrong side of history to be on! Hopefully the pizza was good because that was the most expensive pizza the world has and probably ever will see!
